Project Concept

The Place You Almost Remember is a small experimental game that explores memory and familiarity through interactive spaces inspired by personal recollection. The player moves through a series of quiet environments resembling fragments of a life, such as a childhood room, and interacts with meaningful objects that trigger brief, reflective dialogue. Each space represents a self-contained memory moment rather than a traditional level.

The project centers on spatial and emotional recognition rather than a set goal or game mission. Instead of tutorials or complex mechanics, the game relies on the environment and subtle transitions between scenes. As players move from one memory space to the next, the experience emphasizes how memories are revisited in fragments rather than linear narrative.

The Process

This project is developed using the Godot Game Engine, with scenes created to represent individual memories connected through simple transitions. Core gameplay systems include player movement, scene switching, object interaction, and dialogue display. Interactable objects are implemented using collision areas and input detection, allowing the player to trigger short dialogue responses by pressing a key. Scene transitions are handled through Godot’s scene management system, and dialogue is handled through the Dialogue Manager plugin.

The project is designed to run on a standard laptop or desktop computer and requires no additional physical components or external hardware.

Concept Inspiration

This project draws inspiration from other experimental games that prioritize player interpretation and recognition over explicit goals, building on traditions of environmental storytelling and minimal UI design.
